Lynn is the second largest city in Essex County, and the court handles a significant volume of traffic cases each year. Route 1A runs through the city, and Route 1 passes nearby. MBTA Blue Line service connects Lynn to Boston, but many residents still drive, which means Route 1A and the downtown streets see steady enforcement. If your case is scheduled here, plan to arrive early. Parking near the courthouse can be limited.

The Lynn District Court is part of the Massachusetts Trial Court system. You can find general court information, hours, and contact details on the official court page.

How to Search Lynn Traffic Records

The easiest way to look up a Lynn traffic case is through MassCourts.org. The site is free to use and open to the public. You can search by case number, name, or citation number. Most civil motor vehicle infraction (CMVI) cases appear within a few business days of filing. Criminal traffic cases like OUI or leaving the scene of an accident also appear in this system.

If you need help reading a docket or understanding what the entries mean, the state provides a guide. See the court docket search tutorial for step-by-step instructions. The docket will show you whether a hearing is scheduled, what the outcome was, and if any fines or assessments were ordered.

Traffic Tickets in Lynn: Your Options

When you get a traffic ticket in Lynn, you have three choices. You can pay the fine, which admits the civil infraction. You can request a clerk-magistrate hearing. Or you can request a judge hearing after the clerk hearing. Most civil tickets fall under MGL Chapter 90C, which governs civil motor vehicle infractions in Massachusetts.

A clerk-magistrate hearing costs $25. A judge appeal costs $50. You must request a hearing within 20 days of the ticket date. At the judge hearing, the officer must appear or the case gets dismissed. That rule makes the judge appeal worth considering if the violation is serious enough to affect your insurance.

To pay your ticket online or by mail, see the pay your traffic ticket page. To request a hearing, see the appeal your traffic ticket page. Both pages walk you through the steps.

Lynn's dense streets and high traffic volume mean violations are common. Route 1A speed enforcement, stop sign violations, and cell phone use citations are frequent in the city. The SDIP (Safe Driver Insurance Plan) assigns points for moving violations, which can raise your auto insurance rates. Check with your insurer about the impact before deciding whether to contest a ticket.

What to Expect at a Hearing

If you request a clerk-magistrate hearing at the Lynn District Court, you'll meet with the clerk in a less formal setting than a full courtroom. You can bring evidence, witnesses, and argue your case. The clerk will decide whether to uphold or dismiss the ticket. If you lose and want to appeal, you pay $50 and request a judge hearing.

At the judge hearing, the issuing officer must appear and testify. If the officer doesn't show up, the ticket is dismissed. This is a key fact many people don't know. For serious violations with big insurance consequences, it's often worth going to the judge level just for that reason.

The state's guide on what to expect at a traffic ticket hearing explains both stages in plain language. Read it before your court date.

Criminal Traffic Cases in Lynn

Some traffic charges are criminal, not civil. Operating under the influence (OUI), negligent operation, leaving the scene of an accident, and driving with a suspended license are all criminal matters under MGL Chapter 90. These cases go through the full criminal court process at the Lynn District Court, with arraignments, pretrial conferences, and possible trials.

A first-offense OUI may qualify for the 24D alcohol education program under Section 24D of Chapter 90. Completion of the program can result in a reduced disposition. The state has information on this at the OUI laws page. If you face a criminal traffic charge in Lynn, speak with an attorney before your arraignment date.

You can request a copy of your driving record through the RMV driving record request page to see what is currently on your license. This is useful before a hearing or when dealing with an insurance matter.
